Prime Minister of Ethiopia

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – The Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Dr Abiy Ahmed, has called for bold Africa-led climate action through the launch of the African Climate Innovation Compact (ACIC).

Speaking at the opening of the Second Africa Climate Summit (ACS2), Dr Abiy emphasised the need for collective effort in advancing homegrown climate solutions that respond directly to the continent’s unique challenges. The initiative seeks to bring together researchers, innovators, start-ups, rural communities, and institutions across Africa in building a shared climate response.

The Compact has set an ambitious target of delivering 1,000 African climate solutions by 2030. To achieve this, it will mobilise 50 million US dollars annually to support innovation, scale-up, and implementation.

Dr Abiy underscored that Africa must not only be seen as vulnerable to climate change but also as a source of solutions that can transform the global climate economy.

The ACIC marks a significant step towards strengthening Africa’s climate leadership while providing opportunities for young innovators and communities to contribute to sustainable development and resilience.
